This winter I am trying out snow tires on the Yaris. My choice was the General Altimax Arctic sized at 185/70R14. I went with these tires because they were tested by Tire Rack and found to have excellent ice, snow, and wet grip. The pricing was also excellent for such a highly rated tire at $52 /ea. More info here: General Altimax Arctic @ Tire Rack. These are studdable tires however I will be running them studless given the amount of snow we get in this area. I will make sure to post some updates about how they work out.

Thus far after only minor ice and snow I am fairly impressed. Upon testing after a light dusting of snow (< 1") I am able to accelerate noticeably faster from a standing start and have drastically cut my stopping distance. I look forward to testing these on glare ice to see if my impression matched up with the Tire Rack tests. In daily driving on dry roads they seem to be a bit less sure-footed than my previous all-seasons however at highway speeds there is no noticeable difference.
