First Action of Repair-Ignition Cylinder Thursday 31 December, 2009

Key Cylinder Change how to with photos.

So the first thing I did last night was replace the Ignition cylinder. As it didn’t come with one (well it did but it was in the glove box and no keys).  Lucky for me I had a fully assembled Spare Steering Column, including Keys and ignition Cylinder.

Step 1- Removed Ignition Cylinder from spare Toke assembly. This requires inserting the key turning it to accessory and then pressing the spring loaded pin in(I used and 1/8″ audio jack, lol) and pulling the cylinder out of the sleeve.

Here You can see the lack of Cylinder and the old ‘key'(screwdriver, haha).

Step 2- Put the sleeve for the cylinder mate into the accessory position.(Note: if they are not in accessory the lock pin will lock and you will not be able to slide the cylinder in.) Once it is close push the pin in slightly so the cylinder slips into place and the pin holds it.

And with that You have installed a new key cylinder! It’s not hard at all I did all this in about 10 minutes, it would have been longer had the other cylinder been installed, in which case you must remove the steering column shroud and that my add a whole 5 more minute (oh noes…).

Thanks for reading my Blog. For the next few days it will be on the corolla, and then will switch over to my project car once the corolla is complete, running, and back on the road!
