Detroit Autoshow Photos

Sorry for the late update, but here is the photos I was able to shoot at the show. Overall, it was a disappointing show, however there are some key features. The new Acura NSX is a great idea, and it looks like the concept will hold through to production.

Taking out some Jags!

Posted by Jason on Thursday Dec 1, 2011 Under Penguin - Jason

Got the opportunity to take out a pair of beautiful Jags out today for some exercise, which made for a great Thursday.  The sound of the carb’d inline 6 was a welcome treat, and the cars just feel so cool.  The first car out of the stable was a 1954 XK120.  I’ll just let these two videos do the talking.

The second car out was a 1963 e-type.  This is the highly sought after “serries 1″ e-type, with glass covered headlights.  It has an amazing dash, something not seen on many modern cars.  This one is complete with Nardi wood steering wheel.  Nothing like grippin’ grain while switchin’ lanes!

Step one of the exercise was to fuel up the beast.  In preparation for the longer storage time of winter, its important to fill the tanks, and try to stabilize the fuel as much as possible to keep the carbs alive for the following season.  This of course required the obligatory ”gas station shot”.

Soon Terry and I set off on our drive.  The country roads of northwest ohio arent the best when it comes to fun, but we were both enjoying ourselves.

Here is a video of the e-type on the on-ramp.  Such a great sound!!!

Thats all for today!  A great break from what I thought was going to be the winter blues.  Now I have some inspiration to keep me going when the snow starts flying.

Took some time the other day to head down to Snook’s Dream Cars and take some photos of the TE.  I’ve been happy to be driving the car before the season ends.

Random Sighting of a cool Rod

Posted by Jason on Tuesday Sep 6, 2011 Under Penguin - Jason

While at the Mayberry Dream Cruise this cold Labor Day I spotted this amazing beast.  At first glance it was hard to believe this car was in a small area of northwest ohio, but here it sat.

Amazing Profile

After talking with the builder & owner, this was no ordinary hot rod.  This was a complete custom job, with the car perched on adjustable coilovers.  Yes, you read correctly, coilovers.  This is the static ride height of the car.  The best part, the owner drove it here from his shop.  The owner was a true artist, and when asked about why certain things were built the way they were he simply replied “Because I felt like doing it that way”  To me, this is the best and most pure form of automotive creation and modification.

Stance!

The car speaks for itself, so I’m going to let the photos do the rest of the talking.

TE72 Update! …under new management

Posted by Jason on Wednesday Aug 31, 2011 Under Penguin - Jason

There was a small shift in car ownership in the recent weeks.  After such, I am now the proud owner of a “new to me” 1981 Toyota Corolla with a 20v blacktop engine!

The car is going through the final assembly stages at the moment, with just a few details left to complete before I have a running car.

Plans are for the car to be used mostly for track duty, but the occasional drive on the street.  Its a pretty gutted interior, with one race seat (for the moment) and a simple harness bar.  To hold my ass into the seat, I’ve gone with a 5-point latch and lock harness.

The car is currently stanced on a set of Diamond 14×8 +0 offset wheels, and 185 stretched tires.  In addion to the Diamonds, I also have a set of XR4 Longchamps for the car which will be used as track wheels.  Installed on the XR4s will be some Hoosier R6 rubber.

The suspension is a set of Megan racing coilovers.

Big thanks to Nick for helping me fab up the seat bracket, the seat sits low and centered and is in a great racing position.  This is a cool video of him doing some welding.

The gauges have been mounted in a very temporary fashion.  I used some PVC piping and zip ties.  Defiantly not a permanent solution, but I plan on upgrading to Stack gauges.  When I do the upgrade I’ll remake the cluster, so be sure to look for that in a later post.

In addition to the gauge upgrade, some other upgrades include a new rear axle from a GTS AE86.  This will get me rear disk brakes, and an LSD.

Despite the heat today there was a great turnout at Schenley Park for the 2011 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. I was able to snap a couple of pictures before the heat and humidity chased us away.
